Summary

This program is designed for players up to age 18. Players receive sophisticated coaching with an ongoing focus on fundamental skills and, building on this foundation, increasing emphasis on mastering position skills and team play. Innovative drills solidify player skills, build team effectiveness, and teach winning strategies.

Local teams play tournaments against teams from other New England Volleyball clubs and are open to players with developing skills. Travel teams are for advanced players. In addition to New England tournaments they attend nationally ranked tournaments to play against some of the best teams in the country.

Club volleyball is a great way to play and improve your skills through the winter so you are sharp and ready for the high school season in the spring. We hope you will consider joining us.

How It Works

Local Teams - The Beantown Junior Olympic season runs from December to mid-March and features two hour practices twice a week and about six tournaments with other New England clubs.

Teams are formed according to age and ability. Tryouts are required so coaches can evaluate a player’s skills and place him on a team where he can best learn and improve, and contribute to team success at tournaments. There are two tryout sessions Sunday November 15th and Sunday November 22nd.

Practice times are a weekend morning and a weekday evening. Newton South High School is the primary practice location. Practice schedule details will be available on the Schedules page once teams are formed.

Tournaments take place on Saturdays or Sundays and are a full day with pool play followed by championship play-offs for each age group. The tournament schedule will be updated on the Schedules page as details become available.

Players are responsible for their own travel to all practices and tournaments.

Players are chosen for teams in part because the coach believes they will be important to the success of the team and other team members’ development.  Players are expected to attend all practices and tournaments and so should not have a regular conflict with the team schedule.
If he must miss an event due to unforeseen circumstances, a player is expected to inform his coach ahead of time.

Club Fee: $600
Includes uniforms, coaches, practice court time, local tournament entry fees, volleyball equipment, insurance and administrative expenses.

Payment is due in full by 12/14/09. Make checks payable to Beantown Volleyball Club and mail to:

Peter Maier
Beantown VBC
205 Pleasant St.
Millis, MA 02054

When payment is received, the player will receive his uniform and is eligible for tournament play.

Travel Teams - For more accomplished players Beantown offers a travel team option at each age level to give players the opportunity to develop and challenge their skills against other high quality elite teams. If there are enough players who qualify and want to join, Beantown will form a travel team (more detailed information below).

Tryouts

Anyone who wants to play on a Beantown team must attend tryouts where coaches can evaluate a player’s skills and make fair team placement decisions.

Beantown fields age-based teams as follows:

18 and Under:    Players born on or after 9/1/1991 or on or after 9/1/1990 and still in high school.
17 and Under:    Players born on or after 9/1/1992
16 and Under:    Players born on or after 9/1/1993
14 and Under:    Players born on or after 9/1/1995
12 and Under:    Players born on or after 9/1/1997

Tryouts for Beantown Junior Olympic teams will be held at Newton South HS as follows:

Sunday November 15th  Skills and EPIC Score (athleticism) Testing
12:30 - 1:00 PM:    Mandatory meeting with parents and athletes in the Fieldhouse
1:00 - 3:30 PM:      EPIC Testing in the Upper Gym, and skills testing in the Fieldhouse

Sunday November 22              Individual and Team Drills
9:00 - 11:00 AM:             15's and 16's
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM:       17's and 18's

There is a $30 non-refundable tryout fee that covers both sessions. Make checks payable to Beantown Volleyball Club.

Be sure to attend the correct tryout time for your age. Only rarely can an exceptional player try out for an older age group. To do so you must contact Beantown’s volleyball director for permission:

        Andy Mather (508) 367-6867 beantownbounce@ymail.com

Please arrive early to check in and be prepared to tell us whether you’d like to try out for a local or travel team. If you’d like to discuss the travel team option beforehand, Andy Mather would be happy to speak with you.

All players must pre-register for tryouts using the USA Volleyball online registration system. Please see the Registration Instructions page for detailed registration directions.

For any questions on registration or fees, contact:
    Peter Maier  508-376-2652  maierp@comcast.net

Tryouts are competitive - not everyone will make a team. Plan to attend both tryout dates – this gives the coaches the best chance of properly evaluating your skills. The better coaches know your skills, attitude, and work ethic, the more comfortable they will feel about placing you on a team. Missing a tryout date is a disadvantage for you. Your enthusiastic participation in both tryouts is a plus.

Team placement decisions will be made after the second tryout and will be posted on the Team Rosters page by November 25th. Practices will start the following week.

Travel Teams

At each age level Beantown offers the option of a travel team. Travel teams are for advanced players who are serious about playing on a high-level competitive team. Travel players have the opportunity to compete against some of the country’s best teams.

Our goal is to play against elite teams and win. A primary objective is to place high in the standings at major national tournaments during the season as well as at the Junior Olympic national championships next July.

Travel teams require skilled players with passion for the game and 100% commitment. Volleyball should be one of your highest priority extra-curricular activities. If you are chosen for a travel team it is because we think you are capable of playing at a high level and you will be important to the team’s success. Plan on attending all team events, otherwise you are letting your team down.

Practices – Practices assume and build on your mastery of fundamental skills. There is ongoing work to perfect fundamentals but practices primarily are fast-paced dynamic sessions focused on advanced techniques and sophisticated team play. They are designed to produce cohesive, highly competitive teams and seek to raise your play to the next level.

Tournaments – Travel teams will participate in most New England region tournaments and at least two major out-of-region travel tournaments. These are two-day weekend events that require long drives or flights. Typically you will leave right after school on Friday and return Sunday night – sometimes quite late, especially if you play well and make it into the championship rounds. Teams may also attend a one-day tournament requiring an overnight stay. Coaches, players, and parents will decide together which travel tournaments to attend – plan on a minimum of two.

While players are chosen for their talent and ability to contribute, travel teams have a focus on performance. Teams attend travel tournaments expecting to be competitive with other elite teams. Playing decisions will favor fielding the best team to compete and win. On a given tournament day, playing time and utilization on the court will depend on a player’s physical and mental readiness, the strengths and weaknesses of opposing teams, and a player’s skill relative to others on the team for any given game situation. Some players may play more often than others. An important goal is to maximize the team’s performance. This is purely a coaching decision. Players who would not find this approach fulfilling should consider joining a local team.

Costs

Club Fee: $800
Includes uniforms, coaches, practice court time, local tournament entry fees, volleyball equipment, insurance and administrative fees. The cost of travel tournaments is extra – plan on roughly $300-$600 per player for each one.

Payment of club fee is due in full by 12/14/09. Make checks payable to Beantown Volleyball Club. When payment is received, players will be issued their uniform and will be eligible for tournament play.

Payment for each travel tournament is due in full when the team registers for the tournament and finalizes a travel budget. On-time payments are required for a player to be on a tournament roster.

If the team chooses to go to the Junior Olympic national championships in July, the additional cost is roughly $1200 or more.

Family Involvement

Parent participation is essential for the travel program to succeed. In addition to the financial commitment, teams will need parents for chaperones and help with logistical planning, communications, and other support activities. Beantown will contact parents about helping out once their sons make a travel team. The reward is that travel tournaments are fun and exciting events and a great way to share a memorable experience with the boys and other like-minded parents.
