Beantown Volleyball Club

Junior Olympic Boys Volleyball Since 1990

Who We Are

Beantown is a non-profit volleyball club for middle and high school boys in the Boston and metro-west area.  Founded in 1990, the club is an established member of the New England Region Volleyball Association and the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Program.

Over the years, Beantown has grown into a vibrant organization that consistently fields strong competitive teams in the New England region and, increasingly, nationally competitive teams.  The club regularly sends teams to nationally renowned tournaments throughout the season and the Junior Olympic National Championships.  In 2003 a Beantown team finished third in the nation in the club division, and for the past 3 years we have sent a team to compete in the open (highest) division that includes the best 36 teams in the country in its age group.

Beantown coaches are knowledgeable volleyball instructors with years of college and adult league playing experience.  Most are high school or college coaches with extensive club coaching experience. They are dedicated to building players’ skills and team strategies beyond what is normally available in school programs.

Our focus is to provide a positive setting where young men can dedicate themselves to improving their volleyball skills in a healthy competitive environment.  Building on and enhancing our players’ enthusiasm for the game, Beantown programs teach volleyball skills as well as sportsmanship, discipline, self-confidence, goal achievement, teamwork, and a drive to excel.

Beantown treats its members as serious athletes and we seek dedicated volleyball players who have set goals and are motivated and determined to achieve them through effort, reliable participation and a willingness to learn.

With their enhanced skills, diverse experience, and passion for volleyball, our players deliver superior performance and leadership to their high school teams.  Many go on to play volleyball in college and some have obtained partial or full scholarships.

Beantown – a superior extra-curricular choice and a good investment in the future of our young men.

Coaching Philosophy

A core Beantown goal is the continuous development and improvement of player skills – individual, team, physical, and mental.  From Basic Skills to elite Travel teams, there is always opportunity for players to improve.  The primary goal of coaches is to actively work with all players equally to set goals at their individual level and continuously enhance proficiency in a positive and fun environment.  Building on this effort coaches are charged with fielding strong cohesive teams that will contribute to a Beantown winning tradition.

An important aspect of player development is playing time where they can practice, test and hone their developing skills.  To this end Beantown takes the club tryout process very seriously. We make every attempt to place players on teams commensurate with their ability, attitude, and potential and we expect everyone chosen for a team will receive equitable playing time at tournaments.

However, while making a Beantown team guarantees players the opportunity to learn and apply the skills and concepts of volleyball at practices, there is not a guarantee of minimum playing time or how a player is utilized on the court on any given tournament day or competitive situation.  Our coaches are committed to developing all players’ skills and they have the responsibility of helping their players prepare to play and contribute.  But there is also a responsibility for team performance.

To the extent a player demonstrates to his coach ability, effort, and positive team-oriented attitude, he will enhance his playing time opportunities.  Ultimately team deployment on the court is a coaching decision based on the game situation at hand.

Participation in club volleyball should be a fun and rewarding experience and playing time is certainly an important component.  But it is also fun and rewarding for a player when his team excels and wins.
